THEMES I love magic and, in particular, the alchemy of the mind. Recurring themes in my plays include exploring the boundless riches of the interior life while coping with the confines of being in the skin; of finding some kernel of the ordinary to transform -- or pervert -- into the extraordinary; of nothing and no one ever quite being what they first appear to be. While my repertoire includes several naturalistic "real time" plays, the majority of the works lean toward abstract, metaphysical or alternative existence. They are worlds where fantasy and reality coexist in tandem but then suddenly come crashing together until the line between where one ends and the other begins becomes an irrevocable, indistinguishable blur. The works to date can generally be summarized as adult oriented, quirky, language-specific, and with elements of comedy and irony in even the most serious pieces. |
OBJECTIVES I aim always to write plays in which no character is merely peripheral or a prop. With no more than six or seven actors per play (in fact, usually less), the characters are designed to parallel the instruments of an intimate chamber orchestra. Although solos are inevitable, every instrument is nonetheless an integral facet of the ensemble and indispensable to the composition. My plots offer unique opportunities for diverse and non-traditional casting. A current emphasis is on creating strong roles for women of all ages and particularly for actors (male and female) ages 40-plus through senior. Click Production History/Compendium which includes synopses and character breakdowns for each play. |
